Morrisons was named top employer in the retail sector in our School Leaver Awards 2018. Here, Jonathan Fowler details why starting a career at Morrisons as a school leaver was the right decision for him.
What are your thoughts on Morrisons winning?
It was great to see my course leaders, Emma and Laura, recognised for the work that they have done for Morrisons and the apprenticeship scheme. The top employer in retail award meant a lot to them. It also shows the high level at which Morrisons can operate in respect to the development of younger talent.
What do you enjoy most about your current role?
I am enjoying the variation in my daily routine. It’s refreshing to not have to repeat identical tasks in the same way every day.
What’s been the most challenging thing about your current role?
Retail is fast-paced and ever changing, therefore getting the work life balance, as well as university work, has been the biggest challenge. However, this is negated by the fact that planning with my line manager can make the flexibility benefit both the company and myself.
Where do you see your career progressing from here? What are your future plans?
I still have two years left on the degree apprenticeship scheme and then I will be signed off as a senior manager within my store. I cannot predict with any degree of certainty as to where my career will progress, but I will be supported in finding the pathway for me.
I am enjoying the variation in my daily routine. It’s refreshing to not have to repeat identical tasks in the same way every day.
Tell us something interesting about yourself?
I am studying Harvard’s MCB80X Neuroscience course alongside my Business Management degree and job.
Outside of your apprenticeship, what are your main interests or hobbies?
My main interests and hobbies are: reading about ancient history and human behaviour; badminton, and playing FIFA online against others.
Morrisons is a well-known brand in retail. What are the advantages of working for a well-known brand?
The advantages for me are understanding major Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that are essential to the company’s profit delivery and the impact that specific actions have upon these. Also, there is space for rapid development as the industry and company are constantly changing. Finally, Having the resources available to train colleagues is a plus.
