One Million Apply for Apprenticeships

During 2012, over a million applications were made for apprenticeships. To put that in perspective that’s roughly the same as the number of people in the UK who have bought Gotye's ’Somebody That I Used to Know' or Jessie J’s ‘Price Tag’ or…um… Matt Cardle’s ‘When We Collide’ (nope, we can’t remember how that goes either).
Data released from the National Apprenticeship Service has shown that more than 10 online applications are submitted for every apprenticeship vacancy. Guess which type of apprenticeship was receiving the largest volume of applicants? Nope, not plumbing or engineering: it was business and administration apprenticeships. Hardly surprising considering that business and administration apprenticeships were those that were most frequently advertised.
Childcare and IT apprenticeships were the most oversubscribed, both netting more than 13 applications per vacancy. Less competitive were customer services apprenticeships, receiving on average less than seven applications per vacancy. Hospitality and catering apprenticeships only received around five applicants per vacancy.
