Our trading & shipping school leaver programme is an alternative route into the energy industry for those who don’t intend to go to university. It provides the skills and experiences you need to succeed in our business and the development to help you become a high performing, valued member of the team. As part of the programme you also have the option to study for a Level 3 apprenticeship standard.
A culture that has you in mind, always
At bp, we take great pride in our open and collaborative approach to commercialism, and the support we offer to our people as they use their drive, enthusiasm and entrepreneurial edge to contribute to our success. We’re also strong believers in equality and inclusion. It’s one of the reasons why we maintain a flat structure and have an open trading floor plan – giving you access to colleagues from diverse backgrounds, with differing perspectives and levels of experience.
As a global energy business, we lead the world in powering a cleaner, more sustainable future. And as our business is so diverse, so are the types of people we employ: from engineers and geologists out in the field, to IT professionals, research scientists, financial traders and retail workers.
Trading & shipping at bp
As one of the world’s most developed commodity trading businesses, our trading & shipping arm keeps the planet’s energy moving. With an extensive portfolio and expertise in physical supply and trading and bespoke financial structures, this part of bp enables over 12,000 customers to make the most of their assets – all while offering people like you an excellent place to begin a rewarding career.
Alongside a unique opportunity to act as a key integrator of multi-energy solutions across bp, trading & shipping is perfectly placed to support the company’s journey to net zero whilst delivering distinctive competitive advantage. To do this, we’ll need to be constantly pursuing commercial opportunities. Optimizing our core businesses. Looking for new revenue streams. Striving for more innovative digital and customer solutions, as well as building closer collaboration across bp and beyond. Throughout, the deep expertise and leadership of our people will be key to helping us continue to be one of the world’s leading energy traders.
That’s why we’re looking for individuals with potential to succeed. We will empower you to progress in our inclusive and agile culture. By joining trading & shipping, you’ll have the opportunity to be a part of it all, while working with some of the most dynamic, diverse and high performing teams around.
This is your chance to gain experience across our trading & shipping division on a structured, 2-year foundational programme. This leads to the opportunity to progress onto our 3-year trading & shipping early talent programme, which offers you the opportunity to specialise in one of three tracks: Trading, Analytics or Commercial. Our programmes are designed to equip you with the behavioural and technical skills you need to build a truly outstanding career at bp.
What to expect
You’ll be placed in different front office roles and be an active member of your team. Senior team members will act as line managers and coaches, and you’ll enjoy full on-the-job training and world-class learning.
You will be involved in a wide range of commercial activity in our energy trading sector. That could see you analysing market data, working with the logistics team or supporting commercial trading as part of a financial team.
We’ll give you a mentor to support and advise you on what you want to do in the future. We’ll also work with you to define a career path that could take you into commercial operations, trading, or other parts of the business.
Alongside the programme you have the choice to study for a Level 3 Business Associate apprenticeship fully funded by bp.
So, who are we looking for?
We believe in hiring people with the right core competencies and interest, rather than specific technical experience. That’s why, when it comes to our school leaver programme, we welcome applicants from a range of academic subject backgrounds.
Most importantly, we’re looking for people who have a real passion to work in a global business.
To be successful, you must have the ability to work on your own initiative but also to work co-operatively as part of a team. You’ll have a keen eye for detail, excellent written, verbal communication and numeracy skills, and the ability to plan ahead and prioritize your workload.
To apply, you must be aged 18 or over at start of the programme in September 2022 and have already achieved a grade 4 (C) in GCSE Maths & English (or equivalent)
If you’re currently studying A-levels / IB or completing further education, you must be due to complete your qualification/s in 2022 (we’re unable to progress applications for students who will be part way through their studies when the programme starts).
This programme is designed for school leavers and other individuals who do not have a degree. If you already have a university degree, please apply to our student and graduate opportunities.
