Our London Heathrow Service Centre provides customers with round-the-clock specialist maintenance and support for their aero-engines. The 95,000 square feet facility, which is larger than the football pitch at Wembley, includes a state-of-the-art engine workshop. On our Practical Apprenticeship, you’ll learn all the skills you need to join the team in Engine Overhaul Services Off-Wing Operations, while gaining recognised qualifications and earning a competitive salary.
What you'll do
Over four years, you’ll gain experience across Civil Large Engine Overhaul and a Level 3 Practical Apprenticeship, including vocational training and NVQ Performing Engineering Operations Level 2, a Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering NVQ Level 3 qualification, and a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Engineering.
During the first year of your training programme, you’ll be based off-site in London to complete modules in Hand Fitting, Assembly, Maintaining Mechanical Devices, Wiring and Testing Electrical Circuits, and Milling and Turning. You’ll also study for your BTEC which will include Health & Safety, Maths, Mechanical Principles, Business, Applications of Mechanical Systems, Communications and Projects.
In your second year, we’ll need you to relocate to our Derby Engine Overhaul Services Off-Wing Operations site. Here you’ll gain Fitter experience and complete some of your NVQ Level 3 units and other classroom-based courses – all managed by our apprentice team. We’ll provide financial support for your relocation during this year.
In your final two years, you’ll be based in Engine Overhaul Services Off-Wing Operations at London Heathrow, where you’ll complete the remaining NVQ level 3 units and any required classroom-based courses. You’ll also get the Base Mechanic experience you need to complete your apprenticeship.
What you'll need
As well as showing a passion for practical engineering, you'll need to be articulate, numerate and a great team player. You'll need to learn fast and have the discipline it takes to balance studying for a qualification with the demands of your job. We also expect a minimum of three GCSEs (or equivalent) in Maths and English Language, plus either Engineering, Design & Technology or Science (excluding Biology), all at grade 4/C or above.
