Our reputation for technical excellence is a defining part of our heritage and something we’re immensely proud of. Join us as a Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Engineer, in Submarines and you’ll feel that sense of pride too. Not least because we’ll give you the on-the-job training and hands-on experience you need to become a technical expert. More than that, we’ll support you to gain industry-recognised qualifications, and give you a competitive salary while you learn.
NDT is used across a wide variety of sectors and relies heavily upon Physics and Maths. NDT is vital to us in inspecting components across every area of our businesses, and we work with world-class universities and companies to ensure our inspection technologies are industry leading. Your apprenticeship will give you exposure across our business as you learn how to use NDT to find surface and internal defects in a variety of materials.
You’ll spend time building your practical and theoretical knowledge of x-rays (radiography), ultrasonics, eddy currents, magnetic particle inspection and fluorescent penetrant inspection, undertaking training courses in these five main NDT methods at a new state-of-the-art training facility. You’ll gain manufacturing and laboratory experience of these methods along with quality assessment techniques, providing a mix of both practical and theoretical experience.
What you’ll do
You’ll be trained to lead your own technical projects and to work with expert mentors to develop the skills you need to thrive. Your role will see you selecting the optimal NDT method and conducting tests on parts – so be ready for practical experiments, project planning, resource control, problem solving and gaining technical know-how. You’ll also learn how we use NDT in research and development and have the opportunity to learn about state-of-the-art technologies that enable us to find smaller-sized defects, increase our throughput and reduce our costs.
You’ll undertake a variety of different placements across the business to equip you with practical experience in the various NDT methods. You can also expect to spend some time in our offices, solving technical issues and running projects to help our internal customers. Throughout, you’ll study for the BEng (Hons) NDT Degree at Northampton University, getting to grips with the Maths, Electronics and Physics behind these methods. This is a new degree, designed by Rolls-Royce and the British Institute of NDT. Some modules will be delivered residentially at Northampton University; other modules will be delivered via distance learning.
What you’ll need
You’ll have two A Levels (or equivalent) at a grade B. One of these must be Maths and the second may be Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, Engineering/IT-related Technology or an additional Mathematics-related subject. Alternatively, you’ll have an Engineering Extended Level 3 BTEC at DDM. You’ll also need at least 3 GCSE’s including GCSE Maths at a grade 6/B, GCSE English Language at a grade 5/B and GCSE Physics at a Grade 6/B.
Due to the nature of our work in Defence, we’re unable to employ anyone who doesn’t have the legal right to live and work in the UK and if you have spent more than three months outside of the UK in the last five years (e.g. travelling, working, living), we might not be able to employ you. This role is subject to Full UK Security Check Clearance issued by the United Kingdom Security Vetting.
Beyond your academic achievements, we'll be looking for creativity and an agile approach. You’ll need to be someone who pays attention to detail and is self-motivated to deliver on project work. Your ability to deliver what you say you’re going to do, on time, is important. And you must be a strong team-player.
What you’ll get
A competitive salary starting at £13,830 per year
A competitive pension and 33 days’ holiday per year (including bank holidays)
Career support from day one
A Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship
Internationally recognised NDT qualifications to NDT Level III
The chance to apply for Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status with the British Institute of NDT
