The 3 year Manufacturing Apprentice Programme

On joining the Leonardo Manufacturing Apprentice Programme, you will unlock a wealth of learning and development opportunities. We have created a programme that not only increases your technical skills and capability through hands on experience working with specialists in their field but also develops your academic and practical understanding of the diverse world that is Manufacturing & Supply Chain. You become part of a programme that is managed and tailored to provide a springboard into the world of Manufacturing.  Our programme is split into 2 phases:

Years 1 and 2: 
Through a mixture of work placements and college modules you will develop the key engineering skills and knowledge to work effectively in a high technology manufacturing company, gaining the necessary academic credits for an NC in Engineering and vocational credits for your Extended Diploma NVQ.

Year 3:

  • You will be selected through a combination of academic/vocational progress to transfer onto one of our skill specific paths, which include:
  • Mechanical assembly and test
  • Electromechanical assembly
  • Electro optic assembly
  • Electronic test
  • Optical test
  • Environmental & System  Testing/Diagnostics Facility
  • Material Supply Chain Control and Logistics
  • Manufacturing Support
  • Beyond the programme there may be the opportunity for apprentices to further their academic achievements based on their talents and capability and on the needs of the business.
  • This on the job training will enable you to complete the NVQ level 3 evidence logs.

Job Description

We are eager to recruit enthusiastic young people into the company who have the capability to develop into highly competent Manufacturing Operatives, working with Process Engineering teams maintaining and developing manufacturing processes.

The key skills for this role are:

  • A methodical and practical approach to problem solving,
  • A desire to work in an exciting Production environment and an enthusiasm to learn and develop practical and personal skills to compliment the business requirements.
  • The role involves teamwork and close contact with internal functions to ensure we satisfy our customers.
  • Work within defined M&SC procedures, with limited supervision and escalate problems to immediate supervisor for resolution as they arise, in order to complete assigned tasks.
  • We do not expect candidates to have experience in our specialised technology or manufacturing processes, but to demonstrate initiative and flexibility and the desire to learn and develop.
  • An enthusiastic approach to working in this exciting environment is essential.

Key responsibilities

  • To train and develop skills to enable the following
  • Work within defined M&SC procedures, with limited supervision and escalate problems to immediate supervisor for resolution as they arise, in order to complete assigned tasks.
  • Identify and resolve problems as they occur, within basic operating procedures
  • Communicate with colleagues outside of own team in order to gain clarification and/or guidance for completion of defined task
  • Provide coaching and guidance to junior team members and/or apprentices
  • Daily Meetings on Schedule Adherence, Load Boards and Visual KPI’s
  • Adherence to the Manufacturing Console  routing times and process steps
  • Actively engaged with Gemba Walks so that C.I activities are implemented
  • Provide support to product transfer
  • Time Management & Absence Management
  • Organise own workload to ensure time is utilised effectively
  • Ensure safety and quality standards are maintained to expected levels

What do we need from you?

Academic requirements:

You must have (as a minimum) the following qualifications:

  • 2 x GCSE grade A-C, English and Maths or equivalents

Other needs:

  • a minimum of 5 years permanent residency in the UK

What can I expect from my working environment?

You will be working within world class facilities. Dependent on your role, you may be working in an office or lab environment or a combination of both.  There may also be opportunities to travel between the different sites and to meet with customers and suppliers.
