Dstl is responsible for designing, developing and applying the very latest in science and technology for the benefit of UK defence and security, across government. In our work, we partner with other brilliant people – collaborating with everyone from small companies and world-class universities, to large defence organisations and other nations. Together, we develop battle-winning technologies, based on deep and widespread research.

On this apprenticeship, you’ll join either the Chemical Biological and Radiological (CBR) group, or Defence Security and Analysis (DSA). The CBR group support the MOD by conducting modelling, simulation and analysis activities. It means you’ll give relevant departments the right capability in the event of a chemical, biological or radiological release or attack. If you join the DSA group, you’ll help provide software engineering and development efforts which will support a range of areas across Dstl.

No matter the area you join, you’ll build and test high-quality code across front-end, logic and database layers. It means you’ll take some responsibility for the project and interpret design documentation and specifications.

To take part in this apprenticeship, you’ll hold at least two A-Levels at grade C or above and you’ll understand all stages of the software development lifecycle. You’ll understand the similarities and differences of agile and waterfall software development methodologies, and you’ll have sound mathematical knowledge. Forward-thinking, you’ll be keen to develop your skills and keep up to date with changing trends.
