Student loans in Scotland

Placeholder

Student loans in Scotland are handled by the Student Awards Agency Scotland: SAAS.

To be eligible for full-time young undergraduate funding you must not meet any of the ‘independent status’ conditions listed here, and the SAAS will use your family’s income to assess the level of support to give you.

You are also eligible to apply for a bursary if you meet all of the following conditions:

- You are eligible to receive tuition fee support

- You are Scottish domiciled and are studying in the UK

- You are taking an eligible full-time course of higher education.

Student loans in Scotland are repaid slightly differently to in England and Wales (the same as Northern Ireland): when you earn more than the minimum income threshold (£17,335 a year in 2015) you will repay 9% of anything over this amount. If your income is below £17,335 or drops below that amount, you will not have to make repayments.
